Weather, Faith, and the Spirit of Lerwick

The weather has a mind of its own. While one part of the country might be drenched in rain another the sun could be blazing across a brilliant blue sky – and just as quickly, the clouds can roll in again. That’s the beauty, and the challenge of Lerwick.

When we plan an event 8 months in advance, we pour our hearts into every detail to make it special for you all, not just a few. The one thing we cannot plan is the weather as Mother Nature will determine this what-ever the date. In the 10 years that I was secretary we have only had ‘one’ liberation from Lerwick on the day. Merv our driver and assistant convoyer has been going to Lerwick for over twenty years and will tell you that he has experienced all four seasons in one day up there.

Those who organise such events are only human – we do our very best, and we care deeply about your experience. Mother Nature is unpredictable. A grey morning can transform into a summer’s day of warmth and light, just as an unexpected shower can bring its own kind of magic. It’s all part of the experience, and it’s why we prepare for every possibility. So, we ask for your understanding – your faith prior to criticising and trust in our efforts. Rain or shine, the spirit of Lerwick and those that compete the ultimate reward The King George V Cup and the sun will shine through.

Convoyer Dave Pettitt has just sent me this photo after he and Merv had fed the birds this afternoon!
